Creamer Media's Engineering News recently published an article, "CSIR playing key role in international Southern Ocean carbon data project", on SOCCO's part in COCO2 (Constraining Carbon with Optimised Observing). The project brings together the CSIR, Australia's CSIRO, NOAA, Columbia University and Saildrone, with funding from Schmidt Sciences. Four wind-powered Saildrone vessels will each sail more than 22,000 km around Antarctica, gathering carbon dioxide measurements in winter, when ships rarely venture south and data are scarcest. The first vessel set off from Tasmania on 20 September, and SOCCO's Dr Sandy Thomalla and Dr Sarah Nicholson explain why filling this winter gap matters for understanding climate change.
